The Religious Affiliation of Deist philosopher
John Toland was an influential philospher of deism. He was the first person called a "freethinker." He carefully distinguished himself from both skeptical atheists and traditional orthodox theologians. His book Christianity not Mysterious (1696), which espoused a philospher between these two camps (now regarded as Deism), was considered heretical by local religious leaders and was burned.
