The Religious Affiliation of Pop Singer
Pop singer Britney Spears was raised in the Southern Baptist Convention. Earlier in her musical careere she was famous for proclaiming that she was a virgin and intended to remain one until she was married. This committment to chastity and sexual morality constrasted sharply with the hyper-sexualized attire and manerisms she made famous in her live concerts and music videos. Spears did not end up remaining a virgin until marriage, but instead cohabitated and began a sexual relationship with boy band singer Justin Timberlake. Spears had intended to marry Timberlake, but they broke up before that ever happened.
Spears became less outspoken about her Baptist (or Christian beliefs and ethics). She became involved in Kabbalah, which had become the latest trendy Hollywood religious movement. Spears' long-time idol Madonna was an outspoken adherent and proponent of Kabbalah.
According to the Mirror, Spears has studied Kabbalah since 1997. See: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/allnews/tm_objectid=14205055&method=full&siteid=50143&headline=a-load-of-old-tatt--name_page.html
When Spears was making plans, MSNBC speculated that she would have a Kabbalah wedding (http://msnbc.msn.com/id/5498806/), but Ireland Online suggested that she was planning a Catholic wedding (http://breakingnews.iol.ie/entertainment/story.asp?j=95387380&p=9538796x).
From: Jeannette Walls with Ashley Pearson, headline: "Nicholson was willing to grin and bare it; Plus: Britney Spears rediscovers religion", subheading: "Old-time religion", on MSNBC.com, 12 February 2004 (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4243559/; viewed 6 October 2005):
Looks like Britney Spears has rediscovered religion - and the pop star's people are furious that the press was there.
The ex-virgin, who used to brag about her born-again values but now is better known for her 55-hour marriage, recently stopped by the Faithful Central Bible Church in Inglewood, California, where she and her mother Lynne got teary-eyed over the service and hugged each other.
"At the end of the sermon, Bishop Kenneth C. Ulmer asked those who had been moved by his sermon to come forward," according to the Scottish Daily Record. "The pop princess and her mum dried their eyes with tissues and walked hand in hand to the front of the church." The paper says the service was intended to "win back lost souls."
A spokeswoman for the church wouldn't comment. But Spears' rep told The Scoop, "I find it disgusting that the press took it so far as to enter a place of worship. I think it's a sad day when someone cannot attend church peacefully. I find it extremely disgusting that someone cannot worship in private - the media took this too far."
