William R. Davie is regarded as one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. He was a delegate at the Constitutional Convention in 1787, at which the U.S. Constitution was adopted and the United States of America was officially formed. He was one of the non-signing deleates at the Convention, meaning that he participated in the Convention but was not one of the signers of the U.S. Constitution. He was a delegate from North Carolina.

William R. Davie was a Presbyterian.

Davie, William Richardson (1756-1820) - also known as "Father of the University of North Carolina" - of Halifax, Halifax County, N.C. Born in Egremont, England, June 22, 1756. Served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War; member, U.S. Constitutional Convention, 1787; Governor of North Carolina, 1798-99. Presbyterian. Member, Freemasons. Died in Land's Ford, Chester County, S.C., November 5, 1820. Interment at Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Church, The Waxhaws, S.C. Davie County, N.C. is named for him.
