The Religious Affiliation of Acclaimed Science Fiction Writer
Octavia Butler: Butler describes herself "I'm a 51-year-old writer who can remember being a 10-year-old writer and who expects someday to be an 80-year-old writer. I'm also... a feminist; and African-American; a former Baptist..." [Source: Novello web site's "A Brief Conversation with Octavia Butler"]; Butler was raised in a very religious home and continues to incorporate spiritual themes into her writing extensively, as in her recent novels Parable of the Talents and Parable of the Sower. Her grandfather was a Baptist minister. Asked about the impact of growing up Baptist on her writing, Butler said: "Well, it gave me a subject, of course. It gave me a particular slant toward religion. It wasn't so much about growing up Baptist, but rebelling against it. It was really obvious in Survivor, which I wrote when I was nineteen."
