The Religious Affiliation of Comic Book Character
assistant to the Escapist
Omar, a Sikh, is the assistant to the Escapist, a superhero created for the novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, written by Michael Chabon. Chabon's novel is a reality-based story about comic book creators. After the publication of the novel, Chabon authorized a comic book series about the "The Escapist," and did some writing for the series himself.
Like the Escapist himself, Omar is a member of the League of the Golden Key, a society dedicated to protecting humanity. Omar, along with Miss Plum, Miss Plum Blossom, and Alois Berg are the principle supporting characters in the Escapist comics.
Omar is the latest in a long tradition of using Sikh characters as loyal assistants or supporting characters for Caucasian heroes. Although only recently created, the Escapist is intended to be a character who was created many decades ago in the "Golden Age" of comics, and thus the character and his supporting cast were intentionally created using very traditional, even stereotypical, elements extent in comics and pulp culture during the first half of the 20th Century.
