Table 3-1: Religious Composition of State Populations, 1990 (%). Based on self-identification, using 113,000-person sample, phone interviews conducted by City U. of New York. Table has data for "Latter Day Saints, " meaning all LDS denominations. But U.S. splinter LDS (outside the main SLC-based church) number only about 125,000, primarily RLDS. 125,000 / 2,487,000 (Kosmin U.S. total LDS) = 5%. Multiply state LDS totals by 95% to get Ch. of Jesus Christ of LDS estimates. |

"Staheli and Elder Yoshihiko Kikuchi are in Bismarck for the public open house for the new... Temple... at 2930 Cody Drive, adjacent to the LDS Stake Center at 1500 Country West Road... temple's dedication Sept. 19 as the church's 61st House of the Lord... The granite temple is 10,500 square feet. It has a number of abstract art glass windows and is topped by a gold statue of the Angel Moroni. Temples of this size average in cost between $3 million and $5 million, Staheli said, and all are paid for before construction... Previously, the closest temples for members here were in Cardston, Alberta, Canada, Denver or Chicago. A temple similar to Bismarck's is under construction in Billings, Mont... This temple district includes the South Dakota Rapid City Mission and the Bismarck, Fargo and Rapid City stakes and the Pierre, S.D., district, together serving about 9,000 members. The LDS church has about 11 million members worldwide and is one of the world's fastest-growing denominations. " |
