"The Buddhist community in New Mexico includes immigrants from China, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Tibet, as well as Westerners. Some attend services led by monks at Albuquerque temples. Some sit in meditation at adobe Zen centers in the mountains. In Santa Fe, on a busy commercial and residential thoroughfare, the spire of a stupa rises from a small oasis of grass and gardens strung with fluttering prayer flags. Built in the mid-1980s by followers of Tibetan Buddhism, it's the site of public meditations several times a week. There is a resident lama, or teacher, and a bookstore. Members of the local Tibetan refugee community, about 100 people, go to the stupa on special occasions, but usually gather in private homes. " |

"Hinduism and Islam together replaced Buddhism, and it has never revived in Pakistan or India as a major faith. Occasionally a wandering sadhu appears in Pakistan, dressed in the saffron or orange robes of a Buddhist monk. Sometimes these holy men come to acquire merit by visiting the old shrines in Pakistan, which are closer to the original sources of Budhism than are the distant, living temples in Sri Lanka or Burma.
