Pentecostalism spread to Newfoundland in 1910 and on Easter Sunday, 1911, the first assembly, Bethesda Pentecostal Mission, opened at St. John's. The work was incorporated in 1925 as the Bethesda Pentecostal Assemblies, the name by which it was known until it assumed its present name in 1930. That same year, using a ship, The Gospel Messenger, the assemblies moved into towns in Laborador. The assemblies are separate from the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada, but maintain close fraternal ties and hold to the same doctrinal position. Membership: In 1987 the assemblies reported 167 churches, 36,000 members, and 190 ministries. "
