"Arizona honors LDS missionary " in Deseret News, 18 Mar 2000. | PHOENIX (AP) State representatives voted in the historical territorial House chambers to pass a resolution honoring a Mormon missionary who worked extensively with Arizona's Indian tribes in the mid-1800s. The lawmakers unanimously passed the measure recognizing Jacob B. Hamblin, who is credited with negotiating the peace agreements with Indian tribes that allowed Maj. J.W. Powell to explore the Grand Canyon for the U.S. Geological Survey. Additionally, he is recognized as the first white man to cross the Colorado River at Lee's Ferry and circumnavigate the Grand Canyon. "Indeed, this was a very special man, " said Rep. Laura Knaperek, R-Tempe. About 25 of Hamblin's descendants attended the recent vote, which was held in the historic chambers as part of Statehood Day celebrations at the Capitol. "He did more to bring about peace than any other white man who's come into the state, " said Hamblin's great-great-grandson Larry Burk of Tempe. |
